Which fees does Shopify charge per order?

With Shopify Payments only the card fee: 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, 2.7% on Grow and 2.5% on Advanced. The plan itself is a monthly fee, and other payment gateways add an extra charge.

Why do ads matter so much on Shopify?

Marketplaces bring buyers; your own store has to pay for them. Ad cost per order is cost per click divided by conversion rate, and it is usually your biggest cost.
